Good Local is a free local publishing service supported in part by advertising, sponsorships, affiliate relationships, and other commercial partnerships. We believe readers should be able to understand when a business has paid Good Local and when Good Local may earn money from a recommendation or link.

1. Editorial Content

Much of the content appearing in Good Local newsletters and on www.goodlocal.com is selected editorially. This may include local news and developments, events, restaurants and bars, new businesses and openings, activities, community information, recommendations, things to do, free activities, and other information we think may be useful or interesting to local readers.

A business does not need to advertise with Good Local to be considered for editorial coverage. Likewise, purchasing advertising does not guarantee unrelated favorable editorial coverage. Good Local retains editorial discretion over non-sponsored content.

2. Paid Advertising

Businesses, event organizers, brands, and other organizations may pay Good Local to reach our readers. Paid opportunities may include newsletter advertisements, sponsored placements, sponsored stories or content, featured event placements, enhanced business or directory placements, promoted offers or deals, website placements, newsletter sponsorships, and other promotional formats.

Paid status may affect the position, prominence, frequency, or presentation of an advertisement. Paid placements will be identified with clear language such as “Sponsored,” “Ad,” “Advertisement,” or another label that clearly communicates that the placement is paid.

We do not intend to present paid advertisements as independent editorial coverage.

3. Sponsored Content

Some advertising may take a form similar to Good Local’s ordinary editorial content. For example, a sponsor may pay for a short feature about a restaurant opening, event, service, business, or local promotion.

When content is sponsored, we will identify the commercial relationship in a manner designed to be noticeable to readers, such as “Sponsored by [Business],” “Paid Advertisement,” or “Sponsored Content.” The exact presentation may vary by format.

4. Advertisements in Newsletters

Advertisements appearing between editorial sections of a Good Local newsletter will be presented in a manner intended to distinguish them from editorial material. When an advertisement uses a story-like format, Good Local will use an advertising or sponsorship label close to the headline or primary content.

5. Paid Directory and Website Placement

Good Local city pages may include directories, lists, event calendars, local guides, or other collections of businesses and activities. Some entries may be included editorially or because information was submitted to us. Other entries may receive enhanced or prominent placement because a business paid Good Local.

When payment materially affects placement or presentation, we will identify the placement as sponsored, featured advertising, or otherwise clearly paid. The presence of a business in a directory does not necessarily mean the business paid Good Local unless the placement is identified as paid.

6. Affiliate Links

Some links on Good Local may be affiliate links. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, booking, reservation, or other qualifying transaction, Good Local may receive a commission or other compensation from the merchant or affiliate network.

When appropriate, you may see a disclosure such as “Good Local may earn a commission if you purchase through links in this story” or “We may earn a commission from this link.” We aim to place affiliate disclosures close enough to the relevant recommendation or link that readers can understand the relationship before making a purchasing decision.

Using an affiliate link does not create an additional charge from Good Local. Prices and terms are determined by the third-party merchant.

7. Businesses That Are Both Advertisers and Editorial Subjects

A Good Local advertiser may also independently be newsworthy or appropriate for editorial coverage. Advertising with Good Local does not automatically prevent a business from appearing in editorial content.

If a current commercial relationship would reasonably be important for readers to know when evaluating a recommendation or feature, Good Local may disclose that relationship with the relevant content.

8. Business Submissions

Businesses and event organizers may submit information to Good Local without purchasing advertising. Submitting an event, opening, announcement, promotion, deal, story idea, or other information does not guarantee coverage.

Good Local may publish, decline, edit, verify, or request more information about a submission. An unpaid submission does not become sponsored content merely because a business supplied the information.

9. Recommendations

Good Local may recommend businesses, experiences, products, restaurants, activities, events, or other services. Some recommendations have no commercial relationship with Good Local. Others may involve an affiliate relationship, sponsorship, advertising relationship, complimentary product or service, hosted experience, or another material connection.

When a commercial relationship is material to how a reasonable reader would evaluate a recommendation, Good Local intends to disclose it. No recommendation is a guarantee, and readers should make their own decisions before purchasing or visiting.

10. Complimentary Products, Tickets, Meals, or Experiences

Good Local or its contributors may occasionally receive complimentary or discounted products, services, meals, tickets, admission, experiences, or other benefits. When such a benefit creates a material connection relevant to a recommendation or endorsement, Good Local will disclose the relationship where appropriate. Receiving something complimentary does not guarantee favorable coverage.

11. Advertiser Claims

Advertisers are responsible for the accuracy and legality of the claims, offers, prices, promotions, and other materials they provide. Good Local may review, edit, reject, or remove advertising, but we do not independently guarantee every advertiser claim.

Before relying on a deal, event date, price, availability statement, promotion, health claim, product claim, or similar representation, readers should confirm important details directly with the advertiser.

12. Good Local Is Not the Merchant

Unless we expressly state otherwise, Good Local does not manufacture, sell, operate, provide, or fulfill products, tickets, reservations, events, food, services, or experiences promoted by third parties. Purchases and transactions take place between you and the applicable third party, and their terms, return policies, privacy policies, guarantees, and customer-service practices apply.

13. Our Goal

Advertising allows Good Local to keep local newsletters free. Our goal is to make commercial relationships understandable without making the newsletter difficult to read. Readers should not have to guess whether something is paid.
